Pollination Contribution Differs among Insects Visiting Cardiocrinum cordatum Flowers

چکیده
(1) Background: Cardiocrinum cordatum (Thunb.) Makino (Liliaceae) is a forest perennial herb distributed in East Asia. Although flower visitors for this plant species have been well reported, their contribution to pollination remains unknown. (2) Methods: We evaluated of C. flowers natural cool temperate forest. investigated visiting frequency, the number pollen grains per body surface, fruit set, and mean seeds produced after single visit each species. Combining results these experiments, we determined most important pollinators (3) Results: For population study, three essential were bumblebee (Bombus diversus tersatus) (Apidae), sweat bee (Halictidae sp.), marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) (Syrphidae). Additionally, found that flower-visiting ant (Myrmica ruginodis Nylander (s.l.)) (Formicidae) small. (4) Conclusions: Pollinator contributions differed among visitors. Our underscore insufficiency current information about evaluate contribution.

Insects on flowers
Insect biodiversity peaks in tropical rainforest environments where a large but as yet unknown proportion of species are found in the canopy. While there has been a proliferation of insect biodiversity research undertaken in the rainforest canopy, most studies focus solely on insects that inhabit the foliage. In a recent paper, we examined the distribution of canopy insects across five microhab...

Dynamic Scaling in the Growth of a Non-Branching Plant, Cardiocrinum cordatum
We investigated whole-plant leaf area in relation to ontogenetic variation in leaf-size for a forest perennial herb, Cardiocrinum cordatum. The 200-fold ontogenetic variability in C. cordatum leaf area followed a power-law dependence on total leaf number, a measure of developmental stage. When we normalized for plant size, the function describing the size of single leaves along the stem was sim...
متن کاملCoevolution: Puff Pollination in Tropical Flowers
A new study shows that birds plucking anthers of the Melastome, Axinaea, demonstrate a novel bird pollination mechanism. Each stamen of Axinaea offers a nutrient-rich, berry-like food body that, when bitten, releases a puff of pollen allowing transfer to stigmas by wind or the pollen-dusted bird.
متن کاملPollination biology of fruit-bearing hedgerow plants and the role of flower-visiting insects in fruit-set.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS In the UK, the flowers of fruit-bearing hedgerow plants provide a succession of pollen and nectar for flower-visiting insects for much of the year. The fruits of hedgerow plants are a source of winter food for frugivorous birds on farmland. It is unclear whether recent declines in pollinator populations are likely to threaten fruit-set and hence food supply for birds. The pr...
